2024 Plastics Sustainability Innovation Awards Winners Announced

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has unveiled the winners of the prestigious 2024 Plastics Sustainability Innovation Awards. These awards celebrate remarkable innovations within the plastics industry that contribute to environmental progress through design, material choices, and end–of–life management strategies.

Sustainable Innovation in Design:

• Eastman‘s Molecular Recycling Facility: Eastman claims the Design award for its groundbreaking molecular recycling facility in Tennessee, the world‘s largest. This facility boasts the capacity to process 110,000 metric tons of polyester waste annually, diverting it from landfills and incinerators. Eastman‘s innovative process also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 20–50% compared to traditional methods.

Sustainable Innovation in Materials:

• Bantam Materials‘ Prevented Ocean Plastic Initiative: Bantam Materials UK Ltd. wins the Materials award for its impactful Prevented Ocean Plastic initiative. This program establishes a market for discarded PET plastic in regions with inadequate recycling infrastructure. Bantam‘s efforts have led to the construction of 13 collection centers, generating over 500,000 workdays for bottle collectors, creating nearly 2,000 jobs, and preventing over two billion plastic bottles from polluting our oceans.

Sustainable Innovation in End–of–Life:

• Ultra–Poly Corporation‘s ELV Bumper Recycling Program: Ultra–Poly Corporation takes home the End–of–Life award for its innovative ELV Bumper Recycling Program. This initiative establishes a comprehensive reverse logistics system with autobody shops to collect and recycle discarded bumper covers, a previously wasted material. Ultra–Poly now recycles approximately 1.2 million pounds of bumper covers annually, transforming them into recycled pellets used in the commercial production of wheel outer liners for GM heavy–duty pickup trucks – a remarkable example of vehicle–to–vehicle circularity.

Leadership in Sustainability Innovation Award:

• Polycarbin‘s Circular Economy for Laboratory Plastics: Polycarbin receives the esteemed Leadership Award for its comprehensive closed–loop system for laboratory plastics. This system facilitates the collection, recycling, and re–manufacturing of laboratory plastic products like pipette tips and tubes. Additionally, their Carbin Counter software provides users with valuable metrics, including scope 3 emission reductions, water conservation, and landfill diversion, promoting transparency and environmental responsibility.
